for a moment I could not see a thing in this moment of glare is an excerpt taken from a book that had a profound impact on me. The titular passage references when the main character sees his love for the first time in a field. I was struck immediately by the intensity of the passage and the way that this author so well and so simply distilled the difficult and hard-to-describe concept of falling in love. It’s this process that the piece hopes to reference and translate. The first pangs of love are a swelling of emotion that is riddled on its periphery with a multitude of secondary feelings: doubt, ecstasy, and hope, to name but a small fraction of them. While this piece is not at all programmatic or narrative in that respect, it treats this moment of romantic discovery as a cross-section of time, travelling around these various feelings that come with the happy burden that love is and can be. Just as Hence, I speak to you now…, an earlier piece of mine for flute and piano, deals with the cutting off or destruction of a relationship, for a moment I could not see a thing… serves as its antithesis, looking at the opposite situation; the catalyzing spark and building of a profound and deep connection from one human to another. for a moment I could not see a thing in this moment of glare was commissioned by the excellent saxophonist Tae Ho Hwang.
