Hence, I speak to you now…
for flute and piano
Duration: 9’
Premiere: April 17, 2017 - Griswold Hall, Peabody Institute - Baltimore, MD; Seungmin Oh, flute - Christine Yoon, piano
Hence, I speak to you now… takes its title from a source I will not disclose in deference to its author. The text refers to the loss or removal of someone from another’s life – whether their relationship be romantic or filial – out of a sense of duty. There is an environment of introspectiveness throughout as the subject deals with a profound, yet necessary sadness, lamenting about what may have been. Out of this immense sadness comes a kaleidoscopic range of emotions, all issuing forth in quick succession. However, each one is undeniably marked by the sense of loss at hand. The piece weaves through these different stages of grief and loss, some beautiful and hopeful, others dismaying and terrifying, linking their expressions together with an E pedal, intoning the constant march towards dissolution that awaits even the most ironclad and powerful of human bonds.
