the sensation of slight things

for clarinet and piano
Written for Bowdoin Music Festival
Premiere: Ning Zhang, clarinet - TianYi Li, piano
July 24, 2020 - Online Stream - Bowdoin Music Festival
Duration: 7.5'
the sensation of slight things is a set of five miniatures based on passages from Fernando Pessoa’s The Book of Disquiet. The miniatures
are as follows:

I: A breath of music, or of a dream, of something that would make me almost feel, something that would make me not think. [28]

II: Heat, like an invisible piece of clothing, makes one feel like taking it off. [354]

III: …ships passing in the night that neither signal nor recognize each other… [318]

IV: Having seen how lucidly and logically certain madmen justify their ideas to themselves and to others, I can never again be sure of the lucidness
of my lucidity. [430]

V: (lunar scene) The entire landscape is in no place at all. [478]
